Purpose of Symposium

Representatives from governmental and private organizations discussed opportunities for businesses to invest in the rapidly burgeoning mineral resources industries of China & East Asia. Meetings between interested businesses and appropriate decision-making governmental and private officials, in a low-stress and relaxed environment, were conducive to the establishment of rapport. Presentations regarding resources and capabilities informed participants about exploration, development, and production opportunities in the region. Approximately 100 people attended the CEAR 2000 Symposium and its functions.

Location

The CEAR 2000 Symposium was held at the convention facilities of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Denver is a major investment and technological center for natural resources. Support services (communications, food, lodging, etc.) were more than ample. Numerous opportunities for recreation and entertainment in the city and in the region also were available to participants and their families and guests.

Weather in Denver

The weather in January is generally temperate, but subject to sudden changes (either warmer or colder) lasting for up to three days before returning to normal. Normal temperatures hover around freezing, from slightly below freezing at night to slightly above during mid-day, with the lowest being about -5oC and the highest being about +5oC. Usually, patches of snow persist in shaded areas throughout the winter, with sunny spots being snow-free. Consequently, it is wise when visiting Denver to bring clothes suitable for brisk weather but probably not necessary to dress for extremely cold weather. If going to the ski slopes, however, one must be prepared accordingly, as advised on the skiers' websites listed in the Recreation section.

Transportation

Denver is an international transportation hub. The Hyatt Regency Hotel has a shuttle bus, available through reservation or by calling the Hyatt upon arrival, to and from Denver International Airport. All formal activities were held in the Hyatt Regency. Other forms of transportation (bus, taxi, shuttle van, and limousine) were available.

Call for Papers

Both plenary (oral) and poster presentations were given at the China & East Asia 2000 Mineral Resources Symposium. Presenters submitted a 250-word abstract of their papers on mineral and energy resources exploration, development, production, processing, logistics, environmental considerations, infrastructure, technology, trade, government policies, and project financing, or other topics potentially pertinent to this Symposium. Submitters indicated whether the presentation was proposed as a “plenary” paper, a “poster” paper, or “no preference.” Submission of abstracts in both English and other languages (e.g., English plus Korean) was encouraged, as well.

All abstracts were submitted via e-mail to Attn: CEAR 2000 Editor at lvmaness@Gmail.com as a message or as an ASCII or Word 6 format file attached to a message. Receipt of abstracts were acknowledged promptly. Accepted abstracts were posted on the Resources & Technology Symposia of Colorado website for this Symposium (china-resources.net). Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers was generally very prompt.
